Fuji Seen Through the Fujimigahara Barrel

尾州不二見原(冨嶽三十六景)

Cooper peering at Fuji through the circular mouth of a large barrel — Fuji Seen Through the Fujimigahara Barrel. The Metropolitan Museum of Art (public domain).
Katsushika Hokusai. The Metropolitan Museum of Art (public domain).

At Fujimigahara in Owari Province, a barrel’s circle becomes a lens. Hokusai links manual labor, geometry, and distant mountain worship.

Distant Fuji plus figures — the barrel hoop is a second viewpoint inside the print.

Study how the circular frame isolates mountain form from surrounding context.

Compare this artificial frame with the natural framing of Hakone’s peaks.

Extended Japanese viewing notes: 尾州不二見原(冨嶽三十六景).
